sorry abou that, I was just trying out Google's German to English translator-I won't do that again!

Basically I was saying that many use methylated spirit to kill mealybugs, they put it on a cotton bud, the kind you put in your ear etc, and touch the bugs with it and they fall off.
Is ok if you have only a few plants and its only a small problem.

Does someone know how 'methylated' will affect ferns if it will be sprayed with water/methyl emulsion?

thanks
Peter

Larry,

stay with the goolge translations - too funny LOL..

Peter,
methylated spirit is probably just "vergällter Alkohol" oder Spiritus.

Tuts Du besser nicht trinken, sonst kannst Du Etikett bald nicht mehr lesen! (Naja, da galt zumindest noch, als Methylalkohol zum Vergällen genommen wurde. - Prostit!)

I guess that it will not affect ferns, if it is used in a reasonable concentration.
BTW, beside the toxic effect the alcohol will dissolve the waxy excretions of the mealy bugs.

Happy spraying,
Bernhard.

Dear Peter, dear members,

I would rather not use ethanol for sprying. Ethanol is an organic solvent and I fear it will harm the fern leaves. Using lower concnetration probably won't damage the fern, but will it then be effective against the mealy bugs?

I would use the provado that has already been mentioned before. It is effective and if used with the usual precautions, it will do no harm (to the plant AND to the user). Since it is systemic, it will effectively remove the parasites. I have tried it on scale-infested ferns and it worked very well.

Best regards,

Frank

Peter, the methylated sprirt(Meths) is not sprayed on the plant, but a cotton bud is dipped into it and then each mealybug is touched with it.

:dontknow: stay with english please!

This is (more or less) a multilingual forum.
The reasons why most posts are in german is that the majority is german speaking. But I think 90% here can speak english.

I por los santos no entiendes ni patata, pudieras escribir también en español.

Saludos :)
Don Pedro

Unfortunately i don't speak German but most of the posts are in german and as i can't read it there's little point in me posting on this forum!

That's pitty.

But keep in mind that you're always welcomed in this forum.
Allthough the majority is in german most of us understand english and some could write in it (or at least they try, like I do)

greetings
Peter

I see lots of posts that are interesting but because I only speak english i can't read them so am unable to contribute. This is the only fern forum tho, although the British Pteridological Society is working on a forum of its own.
