Ford Motor company to Crush Electric Vehicles

Zero-emission vehicles powered by solar panels? Sounds like a great step towards ending our destructive dependence on oil and moving us towards a more just, sustainable future, right? Hundreds thought so and leased Ford Motor Company's most efficient car ever: the all-electric, super efficient "TH!NK City". However, Ford has now decided that zero-emission vehicles are not viable, and the EPA's worst-rated automaker is confiscating the TH!NKs and sending them to scrap yards to be dismantled.

While Ford touts its environmental stewardship, its plans to destroy the environmentally friendly TH!NKs highlight the automaker's lack of will to inovate permanent solutions that reduce local air pollution and slow global climate change. Current TH!NK drivers and a Norwegian manufacturer of electric vehicles have offered to purchase the TH!NKs. Sadly, as of today Ford has refused all offers to keep the TH!NKs on the road in either the U.S. or Norway; instead Ford plans to consign the TH!NKs to the fossil record and keep us addicted to oil.

We must act now to save these fossil-fuel-free vehicles before they become part of the fossil record.

On September 8 a ship ran aground on the shores of Sakhalin Island, in the Russian far east. The ship was operating dredging equipment for an offshore oil project, and spilled thousands of gallons of oil into the water, polluting the beaches of the coastal community of Kholmsk. Experts have warned that a similar or worse accident could occur in other pristine Sakhalin waters that are home to the world's last population of 100 Western Gray Whales.

Credit Suisse First Boston is serving as financial advisor to this Shell Oil project even though it violates the terms of the Equator Principles, which it signed many months ago.

"Shell has refused to adopt necessary oil spill prevention measures that would keep spills like this from happening," said David Gordon, Executive Director of Pacific Environment, a California-based environmental organization that is monitoring Sakhalin offshore oil development. "Now that the oil is in the water, it's too late to clean it up. The damage has been done. It is a tragedy for Sakhalin Island and especially for the people of Kholmsk."

Take action today to tell Credit Suisse First Boston to withdraw funding for this egregious project and to adopt comprehensive environmental standards immediately to prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again.

The Valdivian Rainforest is the world's second largest expanse of remaining temperate rainforest. Located along the coastal rim of southern Chile, the Valdivian rainforest contains some of the world's oldest living trees as well as the world famous Alerce tree, which is often referred to as the "Chilean redwood."

In January of 2003, after pressure brought by the Coastal Range Coalition, the government of Chile agreed to create protected areas along the Coastal Range and reroute a proposed road that would connect the outlying cities of Valdivia and Puerto Mount. The proposed road threatened to fragment this ancient rainforest while facilitating the conversion of the biologically-diverse forest into eucalyptus and pine plantations.

Now it appears the Chilean government is backsliding on their promises by resuming construction of the highway cutting through the heart of this pristine rainforest.

This February, a team of organizers will be touring America’s Heartland in a hybrid car to help launch the first local chapters of a brand new organization, Oil Addicts Anonymous.

Protect Russia's Sakhalin Island! Say "No" to oil spills and to Credit Suisse First Boston

Ongoing investigations by Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace confirmed that BlueLinx, America's largest building products distributor, is smuggling legally disputed, undocumented timber out of Indonesia's critically endangered rainforests and flooding the U.S. marketplace with artificially cheap lauan plywood. Bluelinx is funded by JP Morgan Chase, a US-based bank that has built its financial empire on making Investments of Mass Destruction.

An "IMD of the Month" case study published on DirtyMoney.org details the trafficking of undocumented wood by current BlueLinx suppliers throughout Indonesia.

Illegal logging throughout Indonesia continues to cause widespread devastation to the region's tropical rainforests and neighboring communities. Indonesian Ministry of Forestry reports that 43 million hectares of the country's forests have been damaged or destroyed over the last several decades due to illegal logging, with the average annual deforestation rate estimated at more than 2.8 million hectares (7 million acres) since 1998. These forests are some of the most biodiverse on Earth, and are home to a variety of threatened and endangered species, including the rare Indonesian orangutan. In addition, illegal logging has been blamed for massive flooding and landslides throughout Indonesia.

The ongoing devastation has been well-documented by the Indonesian Ministry of Forests, Yale School of forestry, Environmental investigation Agency, and Business Week Magazine.

RAN is calling on JP Morgan Chase and BlueLinx to immediately comply with a voluntary corporate embargo of Indonesian forest products already in place by Centex Corporation, International Paper and Lanoga Corporation.

Citigroup enforces environmental policy, requires Malaysian timber giant to get certified or get funding elsewhere!
During an “Environmental and Social Risk Management Briefing” at Citigroup’s New York headquarters this week, CEO Chuck Prince told stakeholders that client Rimbunan Hijau, a Malaysian logging giant with a well-documented history of human rights abuses and illegal logging activities, must comply with the bank's new environmental policies. This is huge!

This week Citigroup CEO Chuck Prince made a public statement about client Rimbunan Hijau - a notorious Malaysian logging company with an abyssmal environmental and human rights record - that's already making waves in the financial sector and seriously freaking out the global timber industry.

What did he say? Going against every instinct bankers have to "maintain confidentiality" and "not name clients," Prince called out RH by name and demanded that the company obtain credible, independent, third party certification for its Papua New Guinea operations and specified the Forest Stewardship Council program by name during his comments. If the company, already implicated in illegal logging, slavery, and other human rights abuses, doesn't comply, Citi will sever all financial ties, making it much harder for Rimbunan Hijau to operate.

This, for RAN, is where the rubber hits the road. The Global Finance Campaign, through your support, has worked hard to win policy victories and then translate policies on paper into real changes out in the world. Mr Prince's comments this week are some of the fruits of this effort.

The controversy over Weyerhaeuser's mistreatment of First Nations and their rights has reached a boiling point. Hundreds of Island residents have begun "Islands Spirit Rising"-- effectively shutting down logging on the islands

According to a statement issued by the Islands Spirit Rising, "Weyerhaeuser has shown no respect for the land, the culture, or the people who have worked for them. Weyerhaeuser has also shown no respect for its own word. In commitments made to the CHN, the communities and the people who work for them, five of the six commitments have been violated. Now the company is poised to sell its interests and in its final hours is attempting to strip all that it can from this land."
